Nelson Holden 1920-2007

NELSON.jpg

June 3rd-  SOW6 is mourning one of it's own as Nelson Holden passed away sometime around 7am this morning.

Nelson has been a fixture with SOW6 since Terry Monroe took the reigns in 2003.  His presence was ever familiar with either a video camera or a spatula in hand where he was ready to let you know "Hey, theres a burger in there if your hungry".  Many a SOW6 driver and crew have reaped the benefits of Nelson's pitside cooking.

Nelson's videography has also been seen by many as well.  Always with the camera trained on Monroe's car, if you were lucky enough not to be in the same heat at Monroe, well, Nelson would be glad to video your heat too.  There's no doubt who Nelson was there to video, a loyal man he was.

In addition to cooking and videography, Nelson also spent many years at Smith-Petty Trophies helping Terry with the day-to-day trophy building and even the R/C shop that was once housed in the back of the building.  Being somewhat of a Grandfather to Terry over the last 20 years, he and Terry have more 'flight' time than Terry has laps.  There's no telling how many trophies he assembled for SOW6, ASCS, and numerous local tracks.  One thing's for sure though.... He will be missed on the track and off.

Services and arrangements for Nelson will be announced early in the week.

Point Standings Updated

May 29th-  Five races into the '07 season, and we've only recorded three winners.  Here's how it shakes down.  Aaron Reutzel, posting three wins so far, is atop the standings with a 69 point advantage over Terry Monroe in second.  Forty-nine markers behind Monroe is Tyson Hall, who won the season opener at CPS, with 196 points.  Rounding out the top five actually shows three more drivers.  In fourth position is Brandon Darlington at 190, and currently tied in the fifth slot is Tony Reeves and Dustin Gates with 183 apiece.

Completing the top ten in SOW6 standings are 7) Cody Coggins 180, 8) TIE Marty Hargroder and Justin Hooter 166, 10) Matt Ebarb 158.

Nelson Holden Hospitalized

NelsonTerry.jpg

May 26th-  Nelson Holden, Terry Monroe's loyal pitcrew and videographer for the last several years, was hospitalized last week where doctors found a golfball-sized tumor in his stomach.  As of yesterday, it's been identified to be cancerous.

Anyone wishing to contact Nelson can do by calling Willis Knighton Hospital North in Bossier City, La.  The hospital number is 318-212-7000 and Nelson is in room 3020.  Please keep Nelson in your thoughts.

Future Of Wing 600 Racing

Hunter.JPG

April 28th-  SOW6.com caught up with a couple drivers showing their cars at Hello Georgeous Day Spa & Salon this afternoon, one of tonights race sponsors.  In addition to the SOW6 cars, Lee Knowles brought his sons' Jr. wing 600 to display as well.  Virtually indistinguishable from an outlaw wing 600, we had a chance to talk with 9 year-old Hunter Knowles about his car.  Hunter and his younger brother Zach will be taking turns piloting the sprinter.  Click here to see Hunter's interview.

The Jr. 600 class is beginning to take off at Little Rock's I-30 Speedway with a regular field of 15 cars, where the age group for this class is 8 to 14 years.

April Birthday's

April 1st-  Look's like an easy call this month.  The lone birthday boy for April is inaugural and three-time SOW6 champion, "Bad" Brad Gentry (4/20).  Lately he's probably been called 'dada' or some other form of the word by his children, which he's spending more time at home with and less at the track in recent years.  Brad set the bar high the first year of SOW6 competition and still remains a factor when he hits the track.  From SOW6.com.. Happy Birthday to ya champ!

McDonald's Of Lufkin Added As New Sponsor

March 31st-  McDonald's of Lufkin is the newest sponsor on ther '07 Southern Outlaw Winged 600's race season.  Mike Sawyer of McDonald's will be adding $100 to the purse each night the SOW6 race at Speedarama.

Hall Takes Season Opener At Champion Park Speedway

HallwinCPS.JPG

March 10th- Tyson Hall continued his winning ways saturday evening as the Southern Outlaw Winged 600's Presented by Tango Transport held thier season opener at Champion Park Speedway. Hall led wire-to-wire enroute to a $500 payday.  Coming off a win two weeks ago at Sabine Speedway in a pre-season challenge, Hall has now won every event he's entered in 2007. He's currently two-for-two, unless you count heat races, in that case put him down at four-for-four.

The first event on the season saw 21 cars signed in for the start of the 10th year of sanctioned winged 600 racing. Drivers from as far away as 6 hours made the pull in search of the big payday. The first heat was dominated by former ASCS hotshoe and past SOW6 feature winner, Daryl Wills.  Wills topped his heat followed by fellow Texan, Aaron Reutzel from Clute, Texas. The first heat crossed the stripe as follows:1) Daryl Wills, 2) Aaron Reutzel, 3) #6 Dustin Gates, 4)#72 Justin Taylor, 5) #41 Lee Knowles, 6) #75 Tony Reeves and 7) #5 Buddy Lee.

Heat two was wired by Hall, who so far this year has been nothing short of impressive. Hall started on the front row-outside and quickly took command followed by the #1 of Marty Hargroder. Hargroder made several attempts to gain the lead, but Hall was too strong. At the checkers it was 1) #5x Tyson Hall, 2) #1 Marty Hargroder, 3) #88 Brandon Darlington, 4) #23m Mike Johnson, 5) #3 Cody Coggins, 6) #29, and 7) #59 Sheree Williams.

In the third heat Terry Monroe was back to his winning ways after leading each lap. After starting third, Monroe took command by turn one. Meanwhile, three-time SOW6 champion Rusty Pipes and Matt Ebarb was dicing for the second position exiting turn two. As those two were battling and Monroe was checking out, there was a battle for 4th brewing with James Fairfield securing the spot.  As the laps wound down, it was 1) #51 Terry Monroe, 2) # Matt Ebarb, 3) #47 Rusty Pipes, 4) #141 James Fairfiled, 5) #8k, and 6) #85 John McCord.

As the field was set for the feature it was time to draw for the invert. Wills, winner of heat one, pulled a #2 inverting the top two rows. The invert put Monroe on the point with Reutzel on the outside. As the green waved, It only took a few laps for the caution to fly in turn four for Hargroder and Turner. Hargroder was able to fire and restart at the tail of the pack, Turner wasn't as lucky with with night-ending damage to left front. Back up front Hall was in the lead and covering ground quickly with Reutzel in tow. Reutzel was poised several times to pull alongside Hall, but never had enough to make the pass. At the checkers flew, Hall had lapped the field up to 5th place. The finishing order is as follows: 1) Hall, 2) Reutzel, 3) Wills, 4) Monroe, 5) Johnson, 6) Fairfield, 7) Coggins, 8) Williams and 9) 8k.

Mike Johnson aboard his #23m was awarded the Pepsi Hard Charger Award by passing six cars to his 5th place finish.  On hand to present the award was Pepsi Americas On-Premise Sales Representative Brian McCabe.

Other starters unable to finish recording a DNF on the first night are: #41 Knowles (motor), #6 Gates (chain), #72 Taylor (damage), #47 Pipes (chain), #75 (chain), #88 (damage), #1 Hargroder (motor), #59 (unknown), and #10 Ebarb (unknown).

Heat Race Videos Added

February 26th-  The feature race video was too big to upload for everyone to view.  So, here's a couple videos for those that couldn't make it.  One is of the first heat where Rusty Pipes and Daryl Wills chase down Matt Ebarb, and in the second heat we pick up after Marty Hargroder tanked his motor and Tyson Hall continued to stretch his lead.  Click here to go to the videos.

Hall Dominates Night One Of Big Star Classic

tysonwin.jpg

February 23rd-  Tyson Hall emerged victorious aboard his Pine Tree Motors sponsored #5x at Sabine Speedway's First Annual Big Star Classic.  For a race early in the season where most teams are still putting their programs together, a handfull of SOW6 drivers answered the call this weekend.

Heat one saw Daryl Wills make a last-lap pass on Matt Ebarb to take the win.  Wills was chased to the strip by Ebarb, Rusty Pipes, J.D. Arthurs and Chadd Roberts.

Heat two was dominated by Tyson Hall who checked out and found the stripe first.  Rounding out the heat was Justin Turner, Brad Gentry, and Marty Hargroder.

Hargroder exited his heat early after tanking a motor.  Turner, who was able to finish the heat, scratched from the feature with motor woes as well.

As the feature went green, it was Ebarb taking the lead until lap two.  Exiting turn two Hall made the pass and was distancing himself from the field.  Meanwhile, Wills and Gentry had their sights on the front and were closing in on Ebarb.  Wills quickly made the jump to the second position as Pipes and Arthurs were farther back dicing for fourth.  Pipes eventually secured that spot with Authurs falling in behind.  Back up front, Wills was rapidly closing the gap on Hall, pulling along side several times but unable to make the pass.  The corners were Wills' strength and weakness as he closed in on Halls' bumper, only to wash up on the exit.  Hall's lead was secured when Wills caught a rut in two and got completely sideways.  Although his momentum was slowed, he maintained his position and followed Hall to the checkers.  Following Hall and Wills to the stripe was Pipes, Arthurs, Gentry, Ebarb, and Roberts.

The second night of the Big Star Classic is still a go for saturday.  Any change will be posted on SOW6.com.  Also, SOW6.com will have the entire feature video available to view online sometime saturday afternoon, providing there aren't any technical difficulties uploading.

Action From Champion Park Speedway's Playday

PDCPS4741.jpg

February 17th-  With the first race of the season less than a week away, four local drivers took advantage of Champion Park Speedway's first playday today.  Three-time SOW6 champion #47 Rusty Pipes, last years winningest driver on the circuit #41 Lee Knowles, and two rookies for the '07 season, Chad Roberts and #9 J.D. Arthurs were on hand for the cold and windy playday.  Unfortunately after SOW6.com left the track, Chad decided to add his own touch to the action.  Entering turn four he got into some rough stuff and flipped his Bailey 600.  The only real damage appeared to be his top wing as he walked away uninjured.   While your checking out the photos, see if you can spot who's #1 and who also pulled a 'look ma, no hands' while driving.

Just click
here for the photo gallery.

Senter And Wills One-Two Again At East Bay Finale Tonight

Feburary 3rd-  Once again Travis Senter stands atop the podium claiming victory over a field of 40+ cars.  The finish tonight was a carbon copy for Senter and Daryl Wills, who ended last night in the same order.  Terry Monroe and Marty Hardgroder had an off-weekend to say the least.  Monroe was able to stay in the hunt, but couldn't advance past 10th.  For Hargroder, he probably wished he was back in Opelouses in his easy chair.  On lap two the main Hargroder's motor let go ending his weekend.  At press time, the teams were loading up as the rain was starting to come down.  No official results as of yet.

Senter And Wills Lead The Way At East Bay's Night Two

Senter.jpg

Feburary 3rd-  Osceola, Arkansas' Travis Senter took the checkers last night at East Bay Raceways 20 lap main during night two of the Winter Nationals.  Senter, who won last years $10,000 to win at Little Rock's 600 Nationals, was chased to the line by SOW6er Daryl Wills.  Ironically, it was Senter who chased Wills to the strip in the fourth heat.  2004 SOW6 champion Terry Monroe and fellow SOW6 competitor Marty Hargroder were in the first heat and placed third and sixth, respectivley.  As the 20 lap feature got under way, both Monroe and Hargroder dropped out with mechanical issues.  Mornoe was credited with 22nd and Hargroder 27th.

Wills & Monroe Make Thursdays A Main At East Bay Raceway

Feburary 1st-  Results are in for tonights 600's at East Bay Raceway.  Daryl Wills and Terry Monroe were the only SOW6 drivers to make the A feature this evening.  The other two SOW6 drivers in attendance, Marty Hargroder and James Fairfield, were relegated to 'spectator' status, along with many, many others.  Forty-eight wing 600's signed in tonight for what was described as "a tough crowd".  Wills finished the evening 7th while Monroe crossed the stripe 12th.

SOW6 Represented at East Bay's 31st Annual Winter Nationals

February 1st-  Daryl Wills and James Fairfield are competing this week at the 31st Annual Winter Nationals at East Bay Racway in Tampa, Fl.  Wills, a multiple SOW6 feature winner whos raced everything from 600's to 360's and motorcross to Formula Mazdas, took a 4th place finish wednesday evening.  Fairfield, who hails from South Texas, finished the night at 13th.

Wills and Fairfield will have company this weekend as Marty Hargroder and Terry Monroe headed east yesterday afternoon to join the action.  Hargroder, who won last years Fall Brawl at East Bay in November looks to return to victory lane once more.  On the other hand, after finishing second in SOW6 points in 2006, Monroe looks to start the year off right in his new '07 Hyper/Tango Transport 600 with an East Bay win.

Feburary Birthdays

February 1st-  Four SOW6 drivers rank among those celebrating birthdays in February, Channin Trankersly (2/2), Lee Knowles (2/5) and Ray & William Hutchison (2/11).  The ages aren't yet available as everyone is still in the tech area.  Happy Birthday drivers from SOW6.com!

Channin, known as 'little tank', has been racing the ASCS series with an occasional start with SOW6.  Knowles is confirmed and ready for the '07 season and the Hutchison brothers are likely to once again race with the SOW6.

January 30th-  Last years winningest driver on the SOW6 circut, Lee Knowles of Haughton, La., just hired himself two 'green' drivers.  It seems Knowles decided to split some of his winnings, after the wife got her share, with his two kids Hunter and Zachary.  Lee and the kids took a trip to pick up a new mini-sprint for the boys.  Lee plans to let the kids take turns racing in a restrictor class in Arkansas, when the SOW6 schedule permits.  Word on the street is another SOW6 driver may be doing the same for his children as well.  Click here for the photos, or you can navigate thru the "From the Garage" page.

January Birthdays

TR75.jpg

January 1st-  Happy Birthday this month to the only driver that celebrates in January, Tony Reeves! (1/9)  Tony had his best year to date recording heat race wins and a top 10 finish in final SOW6 point standings with a 9th.  From SOW6, Happy Birthday Tony!

December 31st-  SOW6.com paid a visit to two of our local drivers to see what they've been up to.  Finishing 4th in the '06 standings, Brandon Darlington of Bossier City was hard at work 'pimpin' his ride.  No, you won't find spinners on his Factor 1, but his truck is beginning to sport a little bling.  Our other stop was Monroe Morotsports where Terry Monroe has been hard at work on his hauler conversion.  Click here to see Brandon and Terry's progress during the winter.

December 28th, 2006-  The 2007 Southern Outlaw Winged 600's schedule is set to be released this weekend.  Entering it's tenth year of competition, the series has been the leader in 600cc racing in the southern United States.  Laying down a standard set of governing rules which other organizations have modeled themselves after.

The '07 schedule will once again feature a 'Super Sprint Series' which has a separate purse and point system.  The Super Series is designed to take the championship points out of the equasion, ideally, having the drivers go-for-broke to get the win.  Only one driver has ever won both the SOW6 championship and the Super Series in the same year, Terry Monroe in 2004.
